Happy Spring Break!

We hope that you enjoy spending time with your family and making lots of great memories during the Spring Break!

It is the first day of spring! When you are outside, use your 5 senses to notice any clues that tell us what season we are in. Is it really spring outside yet?

GetEpic and Prodigy

All families have been sent an email invite to use GetEpic for free access to books online.
Students can create a puppet show, make an event map or comic book, to retell the story. They could also paint the setting of the book or draw the main character(s).
If it is a non-fiction book, they could make their own newspaper about the facts from the book. Have fun!

Students may also continue to practice their math skills on Prodigy. We choose the skills that your child will be working on in Prodigy. If you need your child's login information for Prodigy, please email Mr. Butler or Mrs. Tjostheim.
Currently, students are working on comparing numbers (greater than, less than, equal to) and will be moving on to composing and decomposing numbers up to 20.

I See, I Think, I Wonder

We use this thinking routine to think critically.

Free Writing

Here are some samples of our free writing. When we are working in our journals and come up with an idea for free writing we add it to our Ideas Page. Then when we have free writing, we pick one of our ideas and write about it. Ask me how I know if I did a good job!!!

Event Mapping

We organize our thinking using Event Maps:

Writing Criteria

Writing

When we are writing we are using this checklist to know if we did a good job.

Pink Shirt Day February 26th (Tomorrow)

To acknowledge Auburn Bay School’s participation in Pink Shirt Day tomorrow, February 26, and to continue the fight against bullying, students and staff will be encouraged to wear something pink. Pink became the color for standing up to bullying when two students in Nova Scotia stood up to bullying in their high school.  A student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school and these students showed their support for him by buying pink shirts and encouraging other students to wear them.

Thank you for helping us to create an environment that is safe and supportive. Together we can make a difference.

Winter Research

We have been researching about what animals do in the winter. Now we are going to use our research to write a good copy about our topic.

Find and Fix

We have been practicing the Find and Fix thinking strategy using the 100s chart. Can you find the 5 mistakes and fix them? Tell me why you think what you think.

Always, Sometimes, Never

We use the thinking routine Always, Sometimes or Never to explain our thinking in math.

For each example, tell whether is is Always True, Sometimes True or Never True and why you think what you think.

21 is bigger than 12

15 is bigger than 50

41 = 14

33 > 3

Valentines at School

Some families have been asking about Valentine's card exchange in the classroom. For those students who wish to give cards, we will exchange cards on February 12th.  Please make sure your child has enough cards for the 46 students in our classroom.  There is no need to write a name in the “TO” space on each card, but rather, have your child simply sign their name in the “FROM” space.

Field Trip Payment on Powerschool

We have received an email from Student fees and they are very back logged. They said it could be a week before they get the fee put on students accounts.

So that being said you can send in cash or you can wait until it shows up on the PowerSchool account but for now feel free to send in the forms.  We appreciate your patience and understanding while we get everything sorted out.  If you do choose to pay on Powerschool, it could be upwards a week and we will send out a message once we hear that it has been uploaded.

Thanks!

We have been doing number talks to figure out what it means to be equal.

Building a Catapult

Here are the instructions that we used to make our catapults this week. We attached a plastic spoon to it instead of using a bottle cap.

Graphing Our Favourite Winter Holiday Activities

We gathered data about our favourite winter holiday activities and made a class graph. Check out the picture on the Twitter feed as ask your child to read the graph to you.

Your child can do the same activity with your family at home for this week's TWAS activity.

Building Spaghetti Towers

We have been designing and building spaghetti towers to learn about how to apply what we learn from our mistakes.

This week's TWAS is writing an event map to write about First, Next, Then. Ask your child to read their writing to you and share what they learned.

Sliding on the Hill

Sliding down the hill is a fun part of recess!  We do however have rules to keep students safe.  We have some rules for sliding that help us to keep our students safe.

1. On your bottom, feet first (no head first, stomach or back sliding)  Knees are okay.
2. One at a time – no doubles, trains, etc
3. Make sure the person ahead of you has cleared the area before you go – no sliding in to people
4. No running into the slide – start standing at the top, sit down and slide
5. Do not go up the slide down area and do not go up on icy spots

Students who cannot be safe and follow these rules will be removed from the playground.

Math Homework

This is a great website for practicing math skills that we are working on. Students are part of our teacher account and each have their own username and password. The teacher assigns the skills that the students are working on.

Click here to go to the Prodigy website.
